Brexit: British sausage under attack from Brussels! (4k)

In something that sounds more like a childish food fight than serious politics, Brussels is attacking the British Sausage.

Brexit: British sausage under attack from Brussels!

So, the British Sausage is under attacked from Brussels.

No, that's not a skirmish on your dinner plate between hordes of armed sausages and Brussels Sprouts.

No, what's happening is that the Eurocrats have decided that the UK won't be able to export sausage meat, uncooked beef burgers and other raw, unprepared food products into the Single Market. A trade worth tens of millions a year.

And while it also means that the UK will have to reciprocate and turn back stuff like Bratwurst and Irish sausages, the real sticking point is that is would also prevent Northern Ireland importing sausages and the like from the rest of the UK.

It all sounds so much like an episode from Yes Minister, where Jim Hacker was able to save the British Sausage from being converted into the 'Eurosausage' or being forced to call it the 'High-Fat-Emulsified Offal Tube'.

Jim Hacker eventually saved the day, but can Boris Johnson?

The Daily Mail reports:

"Britain will be treated as a non-EU country after the end of this year as per the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement but Northern Ireland will maintain EU food safety rules in order to prevent a hard border with the Republic of Ireland.

"Tens of millions of pounds worth of meat will be threatened and supply chains disrupted if a deal cannot be reached to allow fresh or chilled meat products to travel from Britain into Northern Ireland."

And speaking to Radio 4 David Henig, director of the UK Trade Policy Project at the European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE) said:

"It doesn't look like the EU is likely to change their view. If the EU has a ban on the import of chilled sausage meat, mincemeat, that will be the UK position as well from 1 January – because of the way we have rolled over EU law."

So a two-way ban is an automatic thing.

And caught in the middle of this little lot is the Republic of Ireland.

According to the Times, the Republic exports 335,000 tonnes of beef, pig and poultry meat to the UK in 2018 - worth €1.8 billion. The loss of that would be very damaging to Dublin.

The Irish agriculture minister, Charlie McConalogue, called the situation concerning and said:

"It's really important there's very strong engagement to look at the means by which this issue can be resolved."

And the Times quotes an unnamed Whitehall source as saying:

"It's been pointed out that the government has committed to mirroring EU food safety legislation after we leave the bloc. That means if they ban it, then we'll ban it too."

If the EU does go through with this, there may be many shops within the UK, that were set up to cater for the Polish, for example, that might end up with nothing to sell.

But it is reported that both sides are working through the Joint Committee set up under the Withdrawal Agreement to iron out these things.

Now, given the insight into things that Yes Minister gives us, is this little spat all about unveiling a catastrophe today, followed by a victory tomorrow where terms are agreed? While covering up some other little horror-show?

But seriously, this little episode is just another example of why the government must declare the EU is not playing fairly in the talks for a free trade agreement, pull out of the negotiations and rescind the Withdrawal Agreement.

I mean, it's not like the EU is much good at this trade talks lark is it. After all, the UK has managed to get over 50 deals in place in a few years while Brussels struggles to stir from its bed.

And what is the European Union meant to be? That's right; it's meant to be a trade bloc.

Today in Prime Minister's Questions, Boris Johnson was asked the following question by the Tory MP for Tewkesbury, Laurence Robertson:

"Can the Prime Minister guarantee that in any agreement he reaches with the European Union that British Sovereignty will be protected for the whole of the United Kingdom and that the UK will exit the transition period on the 31st of December as a whole."

To which the PM answered:

"Yes, indeed, I can make that guarantee."
