Hong Kong pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai charged with fraud, denied bail

Hong Kong media tycoon and activist Jimmy Lai has been denied bail after being charged with fraud. He will remain behind bars until his next hearing in April. Mr Lai is the owner of popular tabloid Apple Daily, which is fiercely critical of authorities. His arrest is the latest in a string of prosecutions brought against high-profile activists in the city. Lai has yet to be charged with the more serious crimes related to the national security law, which bans acts of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces.
