Hurricane Sandy remains one of the costliest hurricanes in the Atlantic, and the most destructive storm of recent years to strike the northeastern United States. Sandy peaked as a Category 3 storm as it struck Cuba, before ballooning in size and becoming the largest hurricane recorded in the Atlantic, turning post-tropical as it struck New Jersey in late October.
