Digital ManBass Cover HD

It was 4 years ago today that I posted my first Rush cover on YouTube - Digital Man. As I wrote on my first posting of this song, I chose it because I find it to be one of the more difficult songs to play and my thinking was, "If I can get through this one, everything else should be a breeze." It hasn't gotten much easier to play 4 years later but I think the sound has improved a bit.

For me, this whole YouTube project was an unusual endeavor for a couple of reasons. One reason being that I've always disliked having my picture taken, so to sit myself in front of a video camera took me far out of my comfort zone. I happen to live within the confines of an extremely small comfort zone and rarely do things that draw attention to myself; another reason why creating this channel was a very uncharacteristic thing for me to do. My original intention was to post (at most) 10-15 of my favorite Rush songs, blow up YouTube and log off into the sunset. It didn't happen quite like that and since then some interesting things have happened...

- I've covered 110 Rush songs (not counting the ones, like this, that I'm repeating) plus some other songs that I think are interesting from a bass player's perspective.

- I've done a few, for lack of a better word, "tutorials".

- Participated in a number of virtual collaborations, some on which I even sang.

- Was a frequent guest on the "Name That Bassline" gameshow on which I performed a Public Service Announcement.

- Had an international virtual band collaborate on a cover of an original song done by my old band, Crisis.

- Was contacted by Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello's bass player) who linked two of my videos to his web page.

- I introduced myself to Will Lee at a show and "he" recognized "me."

- And most exciting, I've been recognized from my videos at 2 different Rush concerts. I can't tell you what a surreal experience that was.

Additionally, my videos have nearly 1.5 million views and my channel has nearly 6,000 subscribers. Six thousand may not seem like a large number when compared with channels that have numbers in the 30-50,000 range or more, but, for me, it's huge. I'm as pleased with 6,000 as I was when I had 600, or 6 for that matter. I'm all about quality over quantity and I'm blessed to wake up every day to a mailbox full of thoughtful comments, compliments and questions on my videos that I take great pride in responding to, even if my response is limited to a simple "thank you." I've come in contact via YouTube, FaceBook, E-mail, postal service, telephone and even (on the rare occasion) face to face, with a bunch of great people from far and wide, near and not so near.

I'm not, by any stretch of the imagination, a sentimental person, but if I were to write a list of people to thank and whose virtual friendship I appreciate, it would be a long one and I'd surely leave someone important out, potentially hurting their feelings, and that's one of the reasons I won't be writing that list today. However, I would like to gratefully acknowledge Valerie Spinner (http://www.youtube.com/user/vineyardedge) for her generosity in exposing my videos to a much wider audience by featuring them on her channel when I was starting out. Everyone knew Val back then. She was the quintessential "Bass Queen of YouTube." If you just typed the word "bass" into the search box, one of her videos would come up. When I started out I was posting a video a day and I'd keep a little list on my desk with how many views each video got. I'd come home from work and check the list and see "2 for this one", "5 for that one", "ooh, 8 for YYZ." It was a thrill to know that someone in another part of the country, or the world, was watching me play along with my favorite band and, once and a while, leaving nice comments. Then one day I came home and saw the numbers jump dramatically on certain videos, sometimes by the hundreds, and that was because of Val and, what we call, the "Spinner-Bump." As I gained more subscribers, it was a kindness I always tried to return by featuring friend's videos on my channel when they'd post something new. Unfortunately, YouTube no longer allows you to do that, just one of the many changes it has implemented over the years. Anyway, I'm still in touch with Valerie and Val is still really cool.

I'd like to give a sincere thanks to everyone who made these 4 years on YouTube such a great experience. I appreciate every comment and am flattered by every question.

And finally, I do intend to do a video going over my equipment and signal chain and all that business. I've just been putting it off for fear of sounding like a boob.

Thanks and take care.

Troy
