The Big Money Bass Cover HD

This cover goes out to Sean Sammon who, in one fell swoop, managed to -
- Sell me this bass.
- Get me to leave my room on a weekend and hop a plane to Florida.
- Restore my faith in the kindness and generosity of people.

For these things and more, I thank you Sean.

I've wanted a Wal bass for a very long time. Since 1985 to be exact, when I learned it was the bass Geddy used to record the Power Windows album.  At the time, I’d never heard another bass sound quite like that, so clean, twangy, and focused.  It wasn’t until 1991 when my wife, Lynn, and I were married, that I’d have the opportunity to play (and perhaps purchase) one.  The only store in the country that happened to actually stock a few of them was the Bass Centre in Los Angeles, Ca. and, as fate would have it, we just so happened to be traversing the California coast on our honeymoon.  I went into the store with a signed permission slip to buy one - A Black MK1 with Gold Hardware, but I just couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger.  I was so tethered to my $300 Ibanez Roadstar II and it’s crude, homemade ramp system that the Wal just seemed to take too much effort to play.  We even visited the store again on our way back up the coast, just to make sure, and I, once again, left the store empty handed.  Fast forward 25 years and the fever hit again…hard.  Over the past year and a half I went on a nostalgic collecting binge, acquiring some of the basses I owned as a young player (the ones I liked anyway) as well as a few basses I’d just always wanted to own. It's been a great experience and, fortunately for me, my tastes in instruments were never terribly extravagant.  The Wal was never supposed to be on that list of “basses I’d just always wanted” as I’ve always had strong feelings with regard to what the maximum amount I would pay for an instrument would be and the Wal well exceeded that number. Nevertheless, in a fever state, I sat down with Lynn and said that I needed to speak to her about something, to which she responded, “We’re getting a Wal, aren’t we?”  I then assured her (once again) that this bass would be the last one.

Edit:
(It seems that my story was longer than the space YouTube allows for such things, so I had to cut out the whole description of my trip. I just left these two portions of the yarn because these sentiments are more important than the details. I may just do a video telling the tale or post the story elsewhere for anyone who might be interested. Suffice it to say, there were a lot of things that could have gone wrong but none did. It took me completely and utterly out of my comfort zone. And, most importantly, at no time was I duct taped to a chair. I fill in some of the details on this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9njg95vPS4U&)

Sean Sammon, who sold me the bass, is the former bassist and founding member of the band, "Puddle of Mudd".

I came away with a few things from this experience aside from an incredible bass.  For one, I learned that I could travel unchaperoned and manage to not screw up too badly.  I also learned that, sometimes, when something seems to good to be true, it can be both - good and true.  And finally, I learned that there are still people out there who follow their heart and to whom profit and financial gain are not primary motivations as evidenced in, not only Sean’s actions, but in something he wrote on my Facebook page which pretty much summed up the whole experience, "She looks good Troy.  I hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I did. Its not always about the cash. It's a vibe thing. You are spot on...It is a rare thing these days. Think about it...its better to make a friend then make a little more cash and no appreciation for the bass. So I do expect new Red Barchetta video. Don't be a stranger. Talk to ya later."

I really do love the bass, but I will always treasure experience I had getting it.

If you’ve made it this far, please continue reading just a little further…Sean Sammon is currently working with the Emma Moseley Band and if you would check them out and show them a little love I would be grateful.

Of course, the song is "The Big Money" off of Rush's "Power Window" album which came out in 1985.
