Live Editing Sessions - Capture One - 11th May 2020
In this session, we cover Luma Ranges to separate the sky from a silhouetted subject and bring back all of its details - We also demonstrate HDR corrections, architectural ajustments using the 4-way Keystone tool, splitting white balances from sky to ground, extensive healing brush use and using levels to stretch the output of a flat image, bringing it back to the level of vibrance you remember.
As follow-ups to this session, I caught up with David Grover from Capture One:
1) Mask Inversions with luma ranges.
- The current way Capture One is programmed is to treat the mask and the Luma Range as two separate entities when it comes to copying and applying masks to another layer. To my mind, this doesn't make (photographic) sense, although I DO see the logic in why it does. So, you must do what I did in the session and rasterise the layer mask first (which APPLIES the luma range to the overall mask) and THEN invert it.
2) Levels on top of adjustments.
- I've confirmed with them that this does indeed behave differently, as I've experienced myself many times (and hence I always recommend to do the levels adjustment on a filled layer at the top).
- Essentially, adjusting levels on the background, then making further adjustments on subsequent layers will deliver a different result than if you make the adjustments first, and put the exact same Levels alteration in a filled layer above them all.
- Whether it *should* behave in this was is another matter, but for now, I'd stick with my recommendation of performing any final levels tweak on a filled layer above all else.
Hope that all makes sense!
