Narges Rashidi urges empathy for children affected by war in BAFTA speech

“It’s time we humanise those who have been dehumanised.”

Actress Narges Rashidi delivered a powerful acceptance speech after winning Best Leading Actress at the 2026 BAFTA Television Awards for her role in the BBC drama Prisoner 951.

Speaking on stage, she reflected on her own experience surviving war as a child before turning attention to children currently living through conflict.

“I was a seven year old who survived war,” she said. “And now I stand here incredibly lucky, but so many children right now in Iran, in Gaza, in Ukraine, in Sudan may never get that opportunity, that chance.”

She added: “The stories we tell matter.”

Her remarks drew strong applause from the audience inside the BAFTA theatre.
