John Littlejohn - Sweet Little Angel
Album: Sweet Little Angel, B.B. King Cover Buy: https://amzn.to/2xzFJsC Model: Paula Almeida Lyrics: I've got a sweet little angel
I love the way she spreads her wings
Yes, got a sweet little angel
I love the way she spread her wings
Yes, when she spreads her wings around me
I get so hot and everything
You know, I ask my baby for a nickel
And she gave me a twenty-dollar bill
Oh yes, I asked my baby for a nickel
And she gave me a twenty-dollar bill
Well, you know I ask her for a little drink of liquer
And she gave me a whiskey still
Oh yeah, if my baby quit me
Lord, I do believe I would die
Oh yeah, if my baby should quit me
Lord, I do believe I would die
Lord, if you don't love me, little angel
Please tell me the reason why

John Littlejohn's stunning mastery of the slide guitar somehow never launched him into the major leagues of bluesdom. Only on a handful of occasions was the Chicago veteran's vicious bottleneck attack captured effectively on wax, but anyone who experienced one of his late-night sessions as a special musical guest on the Windy City circuit will never forget the crashing passion in his delivery.
In 1956, B.B. King recorded "Sweet Little Angel" (RPM Records 468). According to King, "I got the idea for 'Sweet Little Angel' from Robert Nighthawk's 'Sweet Black Angel', though I later discovered that the song had been recorded by someone before Nighthawk. At the time 'black' was not a popular word, as it is now. Instead of using the old title, I changed it to 'Sweet Little Angel'—and that was a pretty big record for me".[6] King's version, which included a horn section, was a stylistic shift for the song and it became a hit, reaching number eight on the Billboard R&B chart.[7] In 1957, he re-recorded "Sweet Little Angel" for his first album Singin' the Blues. Both versions prominently feature B.B. King's guitar work, with his note-bends "sounding almost like a lap steel in places."[8]
