2020 Red-Winged Leadership Awards: Robert Smiley of The Hand Up Project

The Hand Up Project is an advocacy group for people experiencing substance abuse disorders and homelessness. It won first place in the 2020 Red-Winged Leadership Awards organized by Seattle University's Albers School of Business and Economics.
In this video, Robert Smiley, founder of the organization, reveals his 'why' in helping addicts and the reason he looks at and treats them as human beings.
Smiley and many in his team of volunteers are recovering addicts. They go into homeless camps and clean up the area. They invite addicts to get into detox and rehab.
Smiley says he realizes that drugs take them over and the way they behave is not who they are. He knows they can beat their demons with the help of support and community.
Founded in 2010, the Red-Winged Leadership Awards recognize and celebrate Seattle-area innovators who possess a demonstrated commitment to leadership, business acumen, and social responsibility.
