108 Lokesvaras series Episode 4: The Origin of the 108 Lokesvaras in Nepal

The worship for Guan Yin Pusa (Bodhisattva) began as early as in the 1st century BC. By mid-7th century the Guan Yin belief reached Korea and Japan while it also reached Tibet via Nepal. Maybe the story of how Guan Yin reached China is not at all unfamiliar to us, but perhaps unaware to most people.

Besides being Buddha’s birthplace, Nepal is where Guan Yin worship prevails. But how did Guan Yin come to Kathmandu ? and where from were Nepal’s 108 Lokesvaras?

The story was shared by the Former Deputy Director of Nepal’s National Bureau of Archeology Prof. Shresth; A long, long time ago, Nepal once endured 12 years with no rainfalls, people didn’t have food to eat, so Guan Yin came to Kathmandu to rescue the sentient beings with enough rainfall. Drought and famine were resolved and Guan Yin became known as Karunamaya. The prefix Karuna means compassion, and the suffix Maya means everywhere.

Prof. Shrestha guided the TV camera crew and said, that the Licchavi dynasty which was Nepal’s first documented dynasty, approximately between 5 - 9 centuries, recorded that Guan Yin was in Kathmandu. After changes of dynasties, cultural blending, and mixture, resulted in transforming Buddhist Bodhisattvas into Hindu deities, Guan Yin made no exception.
