Evolution of Russian music. Part 3 (20 - 21 centuries)

The Soviet period, despite its transience (by historical standards), is marked by a huge variety of directions, genres and approaches in music. The development of Soviet music in many respects kept pace with global trends, but at the same time it acquired many unique features, both inherited from the imperial period and completely new, developed from within.

Certainly the main diamonds of Soviet classical music are Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Khachaturian (the latter is not included in the video, but deserves attention), whose names, despite all the accompanying difficulties, acquired a world-wide sound. There were other great names: Mosolov (musical avant-garde of the NEP era), Dzerzhinsky (socialist realism in music: simplicity and patriotism), Dunayevsky (the great songwriter of the Stalin period) and others. During the war period, musicians rendered great service to the homeland by composing a host of grandiose-heroic and sensual-lyrical works: symphonies, songs, anthems (one of which even became the national anthem and is such to this day), etc. During the Khrushchev and Brezhnev periods, the names of Sviridov, Khrennikov, Schnittke, Denisov, and others stand out, whose music is saturated with either proud patriotic and national motifs (Sviridov, Khrennikov) or the latest musical techniques (Schnittke, Denisov).

Mass music in the twentieth century underwent a short but very interesting and fruitful evolution from the secular romances characteristic of the last century, to cheerful pop music, lyrical choral and bardic songs, various directions of pop/rock/metal/rap, and the extraterrestrial sounds of electronic music. Each of these musical spheres deserves its own chronological overview.

Of course, my three-part chronological overview ("evolution") does not claim to be complete and accurate. It is merely a tribute to Russian musical culture in all its diversity, antiquity, and greatness.

Special thanks to the user Кот Потап (Kot Potap), who pointed out a serious mistake in the last version of the video. Thanks to him the selection in the video became more qualitative and authentic.
