John Newcombe v Jimmy Connors AO 1975 Final

Jimmy Connors was the defending champion at the 1975 Australian Open (he had won three Grand Slam singles titles in 1974). John Newcombe was the 1973 Australian Open champion. The tournament was held during the Christmas and New year period back in those days and Newcombe had initially decided not to enter, but changed his mind when he knew Connors would be playing in the event. Newcombe struggled through several tough five set matches to make it through to the final (he won his semi final against Tony Roche 11-9 in the fifth set). The final proved to be a classic match and one of the highlights of the Australian Open men's singles during its first decade at Kooyong in Melbourne (1972-82), when the tournament struggled to attract top players from overseas (before 1972 the tournament alternated between venues at several different Australian cities including Melbourne). 1975 was the last time Connors played in the tournament.
