Andrée Geulen: The Teacher Who Hid Hundreds of Children #wwiiheroes #untoldstory
Andrée Geulen was a young schoolteacher in N*zi-occupied Belgium when she made a choice that would define the rest of her life. Appalled by the persecution of Jewish students in her classroom, she risked everything to protect them.
Born in 1921 in Belgium, Andrée was just 20 years old when the N*zis invaded. While working at a girls' school in Brussels, she noticed her Jewish students being forced to wear yellow stars. Moved by their fear and isolation, she joined the underground resistance.
Andrée worked with the Committee for the Defence of Jews (CDJ), one of the largest Jewish rescue networks in Belgium. Through this secret operation, she helped hide more than 300 Jewish children in orphanages, convents, and with Christian families—often under false names.
She memorized the real names and identities of the children in case they could be reunited with family after the war. Despite constant danger and the threat of arrest, she never gave in.
Even after many of her fellow rescuers were arrested or killed, Andrée continued her work with courage and quiet determination.
After the war, she devoted herself to helping survivors and ensuring the children she had hidden could reconnect with surviving relatives—if any remained.
In 2007, Yad Vashem honored her as Righteous Among the Nations for her extraordinary bravery and humanity.
This video pays tribute to a woman who wasn’t a soldier or a politician—but saved lives with the strength of her conscience and the power of compassion.
