Swati Sangeethotsavam 2008 - M Balamuralikrishna - Part 1 of 3 : Raga Aswathi & Hamsavinodini

Part 1 : Swāti Sangītótsavam 2008 : Duration 48 Minutes.

This video is an offering of a live concert of Dr Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (BMK) in memory of him who transitioned 3 years ago on this day.

BMK is accompanied on the violin by Sri. S R Mahadeva Sarma (MS), on the Mridangam Sri. B Harikumar (BH) and on the Ghatam Sri. K L Sudheer. The concert was held on 13th January 2008 in Kutiramālika Palace, Trivandrum and was the Laksha Deepothsavam concert of Swāti Sangītótsavam.

In this part of the video, the following are the contents.

01 - Introduction to Swāti Sangītótsavam [00:00:00]
02 - Pari pāhi Gañādhipa - Rāga Ashwathy - Adi [00:07:44]
03 - Kārañam vinā kāryam - Hamsavinódini - Trishram [00:25:04]

The concert is a real discovery for me as it contains many unheard compositions of Maharāja Swāthi Tirunāl, presented in the format of Muraligānam.

Having enjoyed watching the concert video, may I share some reflections?

Never I have seen a concert with so many renditions that were first time to me. All the renditions have a rāgālāpana and I think, this is a unique feature too. Transition from the first-off to the “light songs” is seamless and it has a phenomenal effect on listening experience.

This is also a unique concert where one could witness both the tunesmith and the performer BMK for the entire length of the concert.

It was interesting to know that Sri. Mahadeva Sarma (MS) was accompanying BMK for the first time in this concert. MS’s poise and his playing and his support is something need to be seen and enjoyed. Also, the deft, adroit and soft playing of Mridangam by BH is also a treat to watch in this video. I am not sure, if I could have observed these nuances just by listening to an audio.

I do not know who the videographer is? I think, he might be a great rasika of CM. I do not remember to have seen a music video with such a level of “visual-guidance” which helps us to grasp the nuances of each artiste. We must acknowledge his skill of capturing the essence of the performance.

The ambience of Kuthiramālika also contributes for an effective listening of the concert. As the wind mildly blows, you can hear the effect on the microphone and also see the rapid flicker oil lamps.

I am sure you would enjoy watching the video to join those audience who could witness the concert live.

My special grateful thanks to Smt. Mahati Srinivas (BMK’s daughter) for her support in bringing out this album for posterity.

To those among us who may have felt that Balamuralikrishna left us this day three years ago, it is only reassuring that he lives on in Muraligānam which will live forever for posterity sake.
