1966 Madras Music Academy - M Balamuralikrishna - M S Gopalakrishnan - Tanjore Upendran - Part 1/2

I believe that I have discovered some of my deepest convictions about divine music reflected in this vintage concert. It has created a milestone in my listening experience and inspired me to share some reflections about the concert.

I am aware that music like poetry, does not influence all alike, for each one evolves in a different measure. The essence of this concert, as I perceived in those moments of experiencing the stillness of mind when listening, is the merit and scholarship of rendition of an individual. It is an integral part of the merit and scholarship of rendition of other great masters. That is, the overall experience is cumulative and cannot be separated as due to one master or the other. This aspect can be easily observed and experienced while listening to both maestros, that is BMK and MSG, together.

I suppose, BMK and MSG together might have shared the concert dais in over 6000 concerts, but today we have very few recordings of the them available. From the few available concerts alone it may not be possible to grasp the complete dimension of their mutual power of co-creating fine music together, especially with such an order of anticipation in rendition. But I truly believe that this concert certainly mirrors that dimension, a rare facet of both BMK and MSG together.

Here is an offering of a restored and remastered vintage live concert of Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (BMK) held in Madras Music Academy in the year 1966. BMK is accompanied on the violin by Sri. M S Gopalakrishnan (MSG) and on the Mridangam by Sri. Tanjore Upendran (TU).

To facilitate an exclusive listening session, the concert is presented in two parts. It is hoped that this approach would help you enjoy listening to the entire concert at your convenience. This is based on the feedback and suggestion of quite many among you esteemed listeners, and for now this is experimental. That is, we will offer in this mode (of presenting in parts) for a while and see the overall impact on one’s listening experience.

Before diving into the listening mode, it helps to see what is in the album that can enhance our understanding and thus get into the realm of a wholesome listening experience.
