The Bells - Originals - 1970

The Originals, had been knocking around Motown for several years without any success in getting their recorded material released before Marvin Gaye took the group under his wing in 1969. Gaye was broadening his own musical wings at the time, getting into writing and producing his own material. As a tryout for several songs that he had written, he recorded the Originals on Baby, I'm For Real, which became a huge hit out of left field in 1969. The follow up to that single was, The Bells, a song Gaye co-wrote with Anna Gordy Gaye, Elgie Stover and Iris Bristol. Released in early 1970, The Bells, became an even bigger hit for the suddenly hot Originals, when it peaked at #2 on the Cash Box chart, week ending 4/4/70.
