Story Structure and Scenes with Documentary Filmmaker Perri Peltz '82

What makes documentary narratives powerful? In this workshop with filmmaker Perri Peltz ‘82, students will explore the first steps of story production, including how to organize material, choose an effective structure, and ground insights in concrete scenes. We will look at Peltz’s Op Doc Series on conversations about race for the New York Times to see how she successfully crafted a narrative arc even with an unconventional format.

Perri Peltz is a documentary filmmaker and public health advocate. Her films include HBO's Remembering the Artist Robert DeNiro Sr., The Education of Dee Dee Ricks, and A Journey of a 1,000 Miles: Peacekeepers. Her latest piece, A Conversation about Growing Up Black, is featured as a New York Times op-doc. Peltz previously worked as a broadcast journalist at NBC, ABC, and CNN.

This workshop is part of a Storytelling Speaker Series organized by the Swearer Center for Public Service that explores the intersection of media and social impact. Learn more at brown.edu/go/storytellers.
