Grooming Dept Chypre Peach

The Soap: Grooming Dept Chypre Peach in Kairos soap base. The scent is a medium 5/10 strength bright chypre (oakmoss, citrus and labdanum) with a prominent fragrant peach note, sparkling citrus top with background patchouli, vetiver and floral rose touches. Scent quality is very good, and the composition is unique with complexity and depth like many of the Grooming Dept scents, which keeps you coming back to it to discover new facets. Kairos is a tallow-based soap with goats’ milk and lanolin, along with a long list of emollients, oils and butters, that are masterfully combined to make a truly top tier soap. The soap is very soft with the consistency of pudding which loads with ease. The lather is the low-lying, dense and slick variety with a consistency of mousse. Post shave is a revelation. Alas, if only there was a matching splash.

Brush: West Coast Shaving Infinity Brush with 26mm three band finest badger knot. This US artisan-made brush handle is a unique ergonomic and comfortable shape. It’s a stunning pour with some nice iridescence and depth. It seems to change in the different light. The knot is dense but not a lather hog. The loft is set at the sweet spot giving it decent scrub and minimal floppiness. The fan splays easily and covers a lot of real estate. This is a stunning brush offered at a competitive price. Look out for periodic brush drops.

The Razor: Wade and Butcher 6/8 wedge, beveled spine, circa 1840. This Sheffield wedge has some nice heft to take on a heavy beard, but the smaller format makes it more user friendly and is a pleasure to use.

The Bowl: Hand Thrown Shaving Scuttle, Two Toned in blue. A scuttle is a bowl within a bowl. Fill the inner chamber with hot water, and it keeps your lather nice and warm throughout the shave. This hand thrown scuttle is heavy piece of pottery with a nice glossy glaze. They are handmade, so they will all be slightly different. I find the scuttle really elevates my shave and makes it a truly luxurious and relaxing experience, in addition to being a handsome piece for display.

The Aftershave: Lucky Tiger Face Tonic. Lucky Tiger is an American barber supply and men’s grooming brand from Milwaukee, Wisconsin dates to the 1920’s. The splash is very lightly 2/10 strength and fleeting with a pleasant orange and orange blossom scent which can work with and accompany any soap scent or fragrance or cologne without clashing. The splash is witch hazel and aloe based with calming chamomile. Compared to other witch hazel splashes, it is less tacky and has none of the astringent witch hazel scent. It leaves the face feeling smooth and refreshed.
