Taking the Road Less Travelled | LAKE SKADAR & SVETI STEFAN | Drive MONTENEGRO E1

Day one of my incredible road trip through Montenegro! I made it to Lake Skadar, the tiny fishing village of Virpazar, Besac Castle and Sveti Stefan on the Adriatic coast.

After touching down at Podgorica Airport I picked up my rental car and drove towards one of the largest lakes in the Balkans - Lake Skadar. Several stops later (I couldn't resist the beautiful Montenegrin scenery) I eventually made it to my first destination of the day - Virpazar, a quaint fishing village on the west side of the lake. Here I took a private boat ride and later explored Besac Castle - a restored fortress overlooking rugged mountains, green wetland and the blue water of the lake.

My next stop sent me through some of Montenegro's spectacular mountain roads where I got to see the wildlife up close and enjoy some breathtaking views. By the time I got to the coastline the late afternoon sun was glowing beautifully across the islet of Sveti Stefan - a place that started out as a fishing village full of locals but evolved into an exclusive luxury hotel complex catering for the rich and famous. It's a stunning area and as the sun began to set I jumped back into the car and drove up to the small church of St Sava high up on a hilltop to watch the sunset.
