Walking the Seven Hills of Plovdiv, Bulgaria

I spent the day walking Europe’s lesser known seven hills in Plovdiv Bulgaria - seven syenite hills that dominate an otherwise flat, sprawling city. Join me for one day in Plovdiv & the Seven Hills challenge!

Whilst trying to work out which hills in Plovdiv were worth a visit I discovered that it's possible to walk to all seven in one day and still have time to explore the area and take in the incredible views of Plovdiv. So that's what I did. When talking about seven hills in a European city there are a number of other places that spring to mind, but if you’re interested in a lesser known seven hills far from the tourist route then Plovdiv could be the place for you.

Starting at Nebet Tepe just above the old town, it was easy to see why this one is the most visited. A small Thracian settlement sprung up on this spot around 8,000 years ago and the area has been inhabited ever since. It's also the closest to the ancient streets of the historic city and offers stunning views right across it.

My hike took me to the other two hills in the old town, both close to the amazing Roman amphitheatre rediscovered less than half a century ago. From there I headed out to the hill furthest from the centre, explored the legend of Markovo Tepe (the hill that used to be) and flew my drone around the massive statue of Alyosha, the unknown Russian soldier on top of Liberators Hill.

It was an exhausting day but totally worth it. The stunning views from the peak of each hill revealed a different city each time and the walk from one hill to the next helped me explore parts of Plovdiv I wouldn't have otherwise seen.

Some questions I set out to answer in the video...

+ How old is Nebet Tepe and how much does it cost to enter the site?
+ Where are the three hills of Trimontium?
+ What's the story behind Markovo Tepe?
+ Which hill is the highest and are they easy to climb?
+ Is it possible to visit all seven hills of Plovdiv in a day and still enjoy the experience?
+ Where is Taksim Tepe and how do I find it?
+ Which hill was destroyed and what's the story behind it?
+ What is on top of Plovdiv's hills?
+ Which of Plovdiv's hills are worth visiting?

The seven hills of Plovdiv that I visit in this video are...

+ Nebet Tepe
+ Taksim Tepe
+ Dzhambaz Tepe
+ Markovo Tepe
+ Dzhendem Tepe (Youth Hill)
+ Bunarzhik (The Liberators Hill)
+ Sahat Tepe (Danov Hill)
