SHE ONLY LEAVES HER VILLAGE ONCE A YEAR — And This Is Why

She put on her vyshyvanka today. Not for a wedding. Not for a holy day. Because for Maria, leaving the mountains IS the holy day. Once a year — sometimes less — she takes her embroidered shirt out of the wardrobe, ties her red kerchief, picks up an empty basket, and walks down the mountain.

She crosses the old wooden bridge over the Black Cheremosh river. Stops on a cold stone by the water and eats a simple bread-and-butter sandwich wrapped in craft paper. Then she walks the muddy road to Verkhovyna — the only town market she will see until next spring.

What she finds there is almost too much for one day. Fresh farm eggs from an old woman's hands — ten of them, two of them from ducks. Sushki. Gingerbread. Romashka candies in thin plastic. Red tomatoes still warm from the greenhouse. Carrots with the soil still on them.

And the beads. Heavy Hutsul jewelry — red coral, Kosiv ceramics, metal crosses on old rope. She tries them on once. Closes her eyes. Puts them back on the rack.

"Maybe next year."

The ride home is an old Soviet Niva driven by a neighbour she has known for forty years. The road is half road, half mud. The car groans. The mountains take her back.

And when she finally sits down on her bench at home, boots still on her feet and eyes closed — you will feel the weight of that day in her chest.

But she is not done yet.

There is still a stew to cook. On the wood stove. In the
quiet.
