Why Would Anyone Work Under Socialism? #history #marxism #socialism #work #workers #job

Why would anyone work under socialism? Capitalists claim people only work when forced. But look at how it works today.

Workers have no means of survival except selling their labour, while capitalists live off exploiting it. In 2019, workers produced the value of their weekly wage in about 12 hours, yet worked nearly 50 on average. In 2024, unemployment was around 5%, and more than 8% of people were in poverty, despite working full time.

So, what does change under socialism? Labour ceases to be the private exploitation of workers and becomes a collective responsibility. Every job plays a role with a defined social purpose under a planned economy. Technology is meant to shorten the working day, not to increase exploitation and throw people out of work.

Now here's the key test -- results. The USSR introduced a 40-hour work week by 1933. Full employment and pensions above subsistence levels were achieved by the late 1920s and became constitutional rights in 1936. Productivity campaigns like the Stakhanovite movement weren't driven by fear but mass participation. They raised output per worker five-fold, and reduced the accident rate by two-thirds.

Under socialism, people work because their labour is useful and appreciated; under capitalism, motivation is debt, insecurity, and coercion dressed up as "choice".
