In his second UFC fight, Cormier faced Roy Nelson on October 19, 2013, at UFC 166. Cormier crushed a slimmed-down Roy Nelson in the heavyweight division via unanimous decision, winning 30-27 on all three judges' scorecards. The fight was not amazing, but that may be because it followed up a Fight of the Year candidate in Diego Sanchez vs. Gilbert Melendez. That being said, Cormier took the fight on all the scorecards, effectively keeping his UFC record squeaky clean.

Prior to the bout, he announced that, win or lose, he would be moving down to the light heavyweight division. Cormier weighed in for the bout more than 20 pounds lighter than previous contests, at 224 pounds.
