Velasquez's biggest opponent thus far in his career had been injuries. He finally had the opportunity to defend his title in Mexico against an opponent that wasn't Junior dos Santos or Antonio Silva, and he was looking to make the most of it.

On the other hand, Werdum has been building towards this moment for a very long time. Years of improvement and key victories finally came to a head on this night, as the Brazilian finally had his opportunity to throw down with the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) product.

He certainly made the most of it.

Velasquez wasted little time to push forward, and both men exchanged wildly. Each fighter landed, but Velasquez was able to move into the clinch and work from there momentarily. The fight moved into the center, the mat, and back into the clinch quickly, as the fight moved all across the Octagon.

Both fighters landed a ton of strikes throughout the first round. While Werdum landed plenty of damaging strikes of his own and split the champion open, Velasquez was able to control enough of the fight against the fence that he likely won the round.

Still, Velasquez was split open to enter the second.

Velasquez opened up the next round with quite a few low kicks, which were landing heavily. However, it was Werdum who began to land the better punches in the center of the Octagon, rocking Velasquez a bit with a combination of punches. However, Velasquez ignored the damage he was absorbing and continued to push forward, though he was quite wobbly.

This continued across the round, as Werdum scored with a lot of right hands while Velasquez kept landing low kicks. At the end of the round, Werdum landed a hard knee to the face which sent Velasquez to his knees. Velasquez proved his heart, stood back up and kept moving forward, but Werdum undoubtedly took control in the second round.

Velasquez started the third round with a takedown and was nearly reversed by a guillotine. Then, he backed away, landed some low kicks, and allowed the Brazilian to stand back up. On the feet, Velasquez landed a hard high kick, but Werdum answered with some nasty knees of his own.

Suddenly, Velasquez took another double-leg shot. Once more, Werdum latched onto the neck, but he pulled full guard with the choke this time around. Velasquez was clearly trapped, and Werdum put the final squeeze on the submission with a big smile on his face.
