The Tucson, Cornelia & Gila Bend Railroad--Abandoned Since 1985

NOTE: For a New York Times article on the TC&GB, see the link at the end of this description.

The 42-mile TC&GB, which ran between Gila Bend & Ajo, AZ, operated between 1916 and 1985, first hauling ore, then copper anodes for several producers, most notably Phelps Dodge Corporation. The TC&GB was the last to operate mixed trains in common carrier service. The railroad was also pressed into service briefly in 1998 to remove the smelter from Ajo. The TC&GB never did reach Tucson.
