Royal Icing Folk Art Flowers and Leaves: A Companion Video

When making my recent 3-D folk art bird nest cookie (video link below), I anticipated lots of questions about how I made the dimensional flowers and leaves on it, and, boy oh boy, was I right! Thankfully, I made a video – this video, in fact :) – which covers all of the steps, from the piping of the individual flower petals with royal icing through to mounting them with royal icing leaves on fondant vines! While these flowers and leaves naturally make perfect sense on my folk art bird nest, they also make whimsical and colorful standalone decorations that will elevate any other sweet presentation – think: cookies, cupcakes, or cakes!

Dots/Centers: ¼ inch to 3/8 inch diameter, for small to large flowers, respectively
Wire support rings: 1 inch to 1 ¼ inch diameter, for small to large flowers, respectively

ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES USED IN VIDEO:
(Note: Of course, you can make any color substitutions you want provided the icing consistency remains the same for each part. I used AmeriColor colorings.)

For Leaves:
Dark Avocado Green, outlining consistency for leaf outlines and thick flooding consistency for dot on vein
Light Avocado Green, thick flooding consistency, for leaf interior
Chocolate Brown, outlining consistency, for leaf vein

For Flowers:
Dark Eggplant, outlining consistency, for petal outlines
Light Eggplant and Peach, thick flooding consistency, for petal interiors and dots (on the blue dots!)
Turquoise, thick flooding consistency, for petal accent dots
Dark cobalt blue (a mix of Royal Blue and Regal Purple), thick “glue” consistency for assembly and beadwork consistency for dots
