Cosmetic Bag #1 | Moderate Gift Project | Zazu's Stitch Art Tutorials

This zippered bag is a great solution for cosmetics, charger cords, what-have-you. My bag is free-motion quilted and raw-edge appliqued. Constructing a curved top keeps bound interior seams away from zipper teeth. The design also features a purse zip with extra large pull, boxed lower corners, and a bound interior using handmade seam tape. I also cover shortening a nylon zipper, making seam tape, options for boxing corners, and wrapping the binding around the seam ends. We also talk about strategies for dealing with seam bulk that is too much for your machine, by grading seam allowances as you work through the project, and of course, your ace-in-the-hole, good old hand sewing. Please join me.

0:41 Project intro.

MATERIALS LIST:
* Quilted work, approx. 12 x 17-inches. I use Warm & Natural batting. You could use a UFO.
* 20-inch nylon-coil purse zip (if available) or other nylon-coil zip.
* 1 7/8 x 45-inch strip of fabric, cut selvage to selvage, for seam binding.

1:27 Cutting the curved top. I like the curve fairly pronounced.
2:08 Apply first side of the zipper with zipper foot and 14/90 needle. See placement MOCK-UP. Sew from zipper top to bottom. Use matching thread if you haven't tried this before.
3:16 Apply the second side sewing in the same direction, from zipper top to bottom.
5:09 Check zipper before finalizing it.
5:26 Trim quilting from zipper seams down to about 3/16.
6:15 Press zipper seam from back with steam. There will be three cosmetic bags videos.
6:33 Topstitch with zipper foot so that you sew through your zipper tape underneath.
7:36 Without mashing the zipper, close the bag on the side where the zipper overhangs. I use my regular foot.
8:59 Close other side of the bag. Avoid hitting the metal zipper stop. I use my zipper foot.
9:35 Trim seams to 3/16 with junky scissors, cutting through the zipper.
10:23 Grading Seam Allowances MOCK-UP.
11:19 Make some binding tape:
* Use blue 1-inch bias tape maker, such as Clover.
* Cut fabric 1 7/8" wide, selvage to selvage.
* Cut point to feed through with a pin.
* Place blue part on ironing board.
* Pull fabric under steaming iron.
12:06 Attach bindings at side seams, over running zipper tapes by about an inch.
13:35 Wrapping the Corner MOCK-UP.
14:25 Wrap the top corners to hide the zipper ends and stitch. Or sew by hand.
15:32 Test options before finalizing the design.
16:04 Box the corners. There are several methods of doing it. The side seam is bulky. Go slow and walk. Maybe prop your foot too.
19:16 Many fun shapes can be achieved just playing with the size and shape of the bag itself and the relative size of the boxed corners.
19:47 Take off a diagonal nip from the end of your side seam bindings to reduce bulk. Then cut binding about an inch longer (on each end) than the length you are binding and attach it.
20:19 Grade out your end seam to relieve bulk. You will cut off a tiny trapezoid. Then box and stitch both ends. If your machine is skipping stitches no matter what you try, hand sew this part.
21:57 Turn out the bag.
22:18 Inside the bag & A GALLERY of bags.
26:26 MAKING THE RAW-EDGE APPLIQUE body at 10x actual speed. It took about 50 minutes.
31:02 TRIMMING THE FRAY after the piece is washed, dried, and pressed with steam from behind. It took about 15 minutes.
