Petra - Canyon walkthrough and the Altar of Sacrifice overlook

This is a short video containing photos and video clips from the Petra World Heritage Site. It includes the walk through the entrance siq (canyon) to the Treasury and views from the cliff overlooking the city. Petra is perhaps most famous among the general public due to its appearance in the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Petra and Mount Hor:
Mount Hor, not to be confused with Mount Horeb, is one of several mountains connected to the Israelites’ forty year journey in the Wilderness. It has tradionally been associated with Jebel Harun, a mountain located near Petra in Jordan. According to the Biblical account, the Israelites passed through this area sometime in the 14th century BCE. It was around this time that Moses’ siblings, Aaron and Miriam, died and were buried somewhere in the vicinity of Mount Hor.
The area around Petra was settled long before the Israelites arrived. If the Biblical account is correct, the Israelites passed through here towards the end of their journey. According to the Bible, Miriam died before Aaron, and Moses chose a high place for her burial. Aaron died not too much later, though the details regarding his death are unclear. One account suggests that Mount Hor was located in or near Petra, while others believe that it was located elsewhere, and that the body was moved to Petra after his death.
Sometime around the 5th century BCE Nabataean nomads arrived in the area and established a city at Petra. For many centuries Petra was a prosperous stop on the local trade routes. However its importance waned in the latter years of the Roman Empire, until it was largely abandoned by the Middle Ages. During the 20th century adventurous travelers began to rediscover the wonders of Petra. The uniqueness and antiquity of the site have made it an ideal exotic movie location, and it has been featured in several films. Mount Hor is part of Petra National Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Jebel Harun, or Mount Hor, is the tallest mountain in the vicinity of Petra. It is not easily accessible from the ruins of Petra, however, and requires at least a full day to get there, climb, descend and return. A well-worn trail leads up the hill. Close to the top is the Ad-Deir Monastery, which purportedly contains the Tomb of Miriam. The peak of the hill is crowned with a small white domed mausoleum. According to tradition this is the Tomb of Aaron. It is sometimes mistaken for a church, but is in actuality a mosque dating back to the 14th century. Also of related interest at Petra is the Spring of Moses, one of many such water sources mentioned in the Torah.
