이 노래는 거제출신의 이시우가 작곡, 김정구가 부른 노래로 오래 동안 국민가요로 불리워졌던 노래이다.

그런데 이 노래에는 이런 사연이 있다.

이시우가 1935년 순회공연을 위해 중국 두만강 도문의 한 여관집에 묵게 되었다.
그런데 밤새도록 옆방에서 한 젊은 여인의 비통하고도 애끓는 울음소리가 들려왔다.

이튿날 이시우가 주인에게 그 사연을 물어 보았다.

그 여인의 남편은 여관주인의 친구였는데 독립군이었다.
신혼 6개월 된 남편은 3년만 독립운동을 하고 돌아오겠다 면서 집을 떠났다.
그런데 몇 년이 지나도 남편은 소식도 없었다.

그래서 아내는 남편을 찾아 만주로 왔었다.

알아보니 남편은 5일전에 일본군에 의해 죽임을 당했다.
그런데 그 죽은 날짜가 남편의 생일날이었다.

그래서 아내는 여관방에 남편의 생일상과 제사상을 차려 놓고 밤새도록 울었다.
제사가 끝난 후 아내는 남편을 따라 두만강 물에 뛰어 들었다.

이시우의 눈에는 두만강물결이 나라 잃고 헤매는 우리 민족의 피눈물처럼 보였다.
이시우가 문학청년 한명천에게 이 사연을 들려주자, 그가 가사를 썼고, 이시우가 곡을 붙였다.

광복절이 가까워 온다.
다시는 나라 잃고 슬피 우는 망국노가 되지 말자 .
이 위대한 자유대한민국을 지키자.
지금보다 더 행복한 나라, 더 좋은 나라를 후손들에게 물러주자.

This song was composed by Siwoo Lee from Geoje and sung by Jeonggu Kim, and it has been called a national song for a long time.

But there is a story behind this song.

In 1935, Siwoo Lee stayed at an inn at the Tumen River gate in China for a tour.
But all night long, a young woman's mournful weeping could be heard from the next room.

The next day, Si-woo Lee asked the owner about the story.

The woman's husband, a friend of the innkeeper, was a fighter for Korean independence from colonial Japan.
Her newlywed six-month-old husband left the house, saying he would return after serving three years for Korean independence.
However, years passed, and there was no news from her husband.

So she came to Manchuria in search of her husband.

It turns out that her husband was killed by Japanese troop five days ago.
However, the date of his death was her husband's birthday.

So she set her husband's birthday and a memorial table for her husband in her inn room, and she cried all night long.
After the memorial service for her husband, she followed her husband and plunged into the waters of the Tumen River.

In Siwoo Lee's eyes, the waves of the Tumen River looked like tears of blood for Korean people who lost their country and their love.
When Siwoo Lee told this story to Myeongcheon Myungcheon, a young literary man, he wrote the lyrics, and Siwoo Lee wrote the song.
