Enjoy This Fresh Unboxing Video From Merriam Pianos: Roland’s RD-88 Stage Piano

The Roland RD-88 is a brand-new 2020 release from the famed Japanese instrument maker, and Stu’s finally got his hands on one to try out. But before we get it all plugged in, let’s get it unboxed and see what Stu’s first impressions are.
Lightweight

My first impression is just how light-weight this piano is, given what it’s offering spec-wise. It’s more or less half way between an FP30 and FP60 in terms of overall footprint and weight (far closer to the FP30), and to be packed with three sound engines, onboard speakers, the full action, and a robust user interface and still be under 30 lbs is quite extraordinary.
Easy To Navigate & Control

The RD88 builds upon the control surface and interface traditions that have been a staple of the RD series for several product generations, going all the way back to the original RD700 series. When I first saw it, it was familiar, easy to navigate, and well-marked. The default settings also made a ton of sense to me and within seconds was diving into sounds that were complex, lush, and perfect for personal playing or performance.
Super-lush and Thick sound engine

Most manufacturers don’t dive into hyper-specific descriptions of their sound engines (for good reason, this is one of the most proprietary and expensive R&D focuses of any electronic instrument) so Roland is somewhat vague about what the new Zen-Core sound engine is...but from what I’ve read, it’s a processing structure that’s been built to accommodate and faithfully recreate virtually all past Roland synth models, and allow interchangeability between current Roland models as well (i.e. you create or edit a sound on one, and you can transfer to another).

It mixes in the Supernatural sound engines for piano and e-piano as well, which makes coming up with a consistent polyphony ‘stat’ a bit tricky...but also not relevant. It only allows for three voices at once, and each one is already so complex, that for live performance, it’s hard to conceive of too many scenarios where it would be inadequate.
Conclusions

We’ll be diving deeper into the RD88 in a subsequent video, but on first impression, this is a fun, highly-successful instrument that brings great sound production, light-weight portability, and versatility; all for a very affordable price.
