Stu Harrison of Merriam Pianos guides us through an overview from Kawai’s ES110 to Yamaha’s P125, Casio’s fairly new PX-S1000 or Roland’s FP30. **Portable Versions**

Kawai ES-110

The ES110 uses the Harmonic Imaging engine, which is an additive synthesis on top of an existing sample of a Kawai EX Concert Grand. Please note this is different than the SK-EX sample set that the new CN / CA pianos have. The ES110 can be connected via wireless bluetooth to a tablet with Kawai’s Virtual Technician, which gives you microscopic control of all of the parameters. It also gives the player 192 polyphony, which is PLENTY for great textured playing at any level of complexity.

Roland FP-30

The FP30 is a no-brainer on this list. I’ve used it in several live-show scenarios, and always been impressed with the ease of use, quality of the Rhodes and piano tones, and the key action - it’s just hard to beat for the price. It’s onboard speakers aren’t quite as full-bodied as the ES110 for piano tone, but of course can always be sent through an amp to beef it up. The addition of the Piano Partner 2 app is almost a must with this one since it gives it the rhythm auto-accompaniment feature.

Yamaha P-125

The P-125 is my favourite of the P series, providing us players with 192 polyphony, the CFS sample bank, high quality audio processing, 24 high-quality onboard sounds, and 14 watts of total speaker power.

Casio PX-S1000

The PX-S1000 employs Casio’s AiR tone engine, combines a 4-velocity layer sample set with some fancy audio processing like stereo spreaders and some fun compression (of course Casio doesn’t call these things by their generic industry terms; like most, they have more consumer friendly labels). The 16 watts is ample for personal use or small rooms, and the 192 note polyphony is impressive for the price.

Kawai KDP-110

The KDP-110 is a power-player in this pack of competitors. 40 watts of sound, bluetooth midi, triple-sensor key action, and full 88-note sampling from their SK-EX sound bank.

Roland RP-102

The concept of the RP-102 is pretty simple: load up a basic home digital with top action, top tone generation, and keep the rest simple. The instrument uses the same PHA-4 action with escapement, textured key surfaces, and triple-sensor as can be found in all other Roland pianos up to the RP501r.

Kawai KDP-70

Last but certainly not least is Kawai’s KDP70, the lightweight and lower-cost version of the KDP110. It’s very much a direct competitor to the RP102 Roland, and more or less a home-version of the ES110 (...why the KDP110 isn’t the home version of the ES110 is a prime example of the piano industry’s knack for confusing model numbers).
