Second-Generation Filipino Migrants in Athens: Cultural Pathways and Hybrid Identities

This conference presentation examines the formation and development of hybrid identities among second-generation Filipino migrants in Athens.

The study explores how second-generation Filipino young people in Athens negotiate identity across multiple cultural, social and spatial contexts. It focuses on cultural pathways, transnational connections, cosmopolitan experiences and the role of social networks in shaping hybrid forms of belonging.

Drawing on interviews and observations in schools, neighbourhoods, religious gatherings, Filipino social spaces and digital environments, the presentation highlights the ways in which young Filipino migrants combine Greek and Filipino cultural elements. Particular attention is given to intergenerational differences, cultural tensions, educational trajectories, professional aspirations, language barriers and experiences of racism.

The research contributes to the study of migration, cultural geography and intercultural education by examining how hybrid identities are shaped in urban environments. It also offers insights into the social and educational experiences of second-generation migrants in Greece, with emphasis on belonging, mobility, visibility and identity negotiation.
