BIG TOE PAIN: Exercise & Strength

Big toe pain and lack of movement can be a huge issue with any lower leg pain. We need movement of the big toe as part of the normal walking cycle and if it is stiff, we tend to compensate at the knee, hip, and lower back. The main movements of the big or Great toe are extension, flexion, and rotation. Many people with a rigid big toe end up wearing stiff soled shoes to decrease the bend with walking that can help, BUT it shouldn't be the solution. You really should try to improve the range of motion and flexibility of the entire foot and especially the first toe. For any high level athlete, you have to have a good functioning foot and ankle, especially first toe extension and first toe flexion. If you don't, it's surprising how many other bio-mechanical issues can occur higher up, because you have a restriction in this first ray, or this great toe.
