Australian soldiers served with ‘pride and dignity’: Matt Thistlethwaite

The relationship between Australia and Malaysia has been forged by some of the experiences faced by the armed forces in World War II.

Strong military ties between both nations’ countries are still evident, as Australia is the only country to have an operating air base inside Malaysia.

Assistant Defence and Veterans’ Affairs Minister Matt Thistlethwaite discusses how these events shaped the relationship.

“That connection has been there since World War II,” Mr Thistlethwaite told Sky News Australia.

“We have maintained what is the only Australian Defence Force base on foreign soil since World War Two."

Australian soldiers are participating in dawn services all over southeast Asia, “strengthening the bond that exists between Malaysia and Australia, and the wider southeast Asia, where Australia has served with pride and dignity”.
