-----TODAY’S LESSON

0:00 Introduction

In today’s lesson, we discover a variety of phrases and situations where you might want to use the word 'SO'.

"SO" is a common word. We use it all the time in day-to-day conversation. The aim of this lesson is to provide you with some great examples so that you can confidently start using "SO" in more interesting and varied ways.

After this lesson, you're going to raise the level of your vocabulary so you can sound much more advanced in your English.

Are you ready to discover the different ways you express yourself using the word 'SO'?

-------0:27 'so-so' meaning

The phrase “so-so” is used as an adjective to describe an average, not very good or very bad, experience or object.

Example:
"How was the film?" "It was so-so".
"How are you today?" "So-so".

-------1:03 'I don't think so' meaning

"I don't think so" is used as a disagreeing response to a question that you're asked.

Example:
"Does this bus go to the city centre?" "No, I don't think so".

-------1:52 'If you say so' meaning

We use this when we disagree with, or want to be dismissive about, something someone has said.

Example:
"This teacher is the nicest teacher I've seen in my life." "If you say so".

-------02:30 'I hope so' meaning

This phrase is used when you’re saying you don't know for certain yet, but you hope something will happen.

Example:
“Will I see you at the weekend?” “I hope so”.

-------2:50 'Is that so' meaning

This phrase can sound a bit formal and we use it in situations as a response to some surprising information.

Example:
Somebody informs you for the first time that your ex-partner is getting married. You may reply with “Is that so?”

-------3:24 'So it seems' meaning

This is a response to an observation, often a negative observation, that somebody else has made. The use of this phrase also has a distancing effect.

Example:
"We're going to run out of petrol. We're in the middle of nowhere!?" “So it seems”/ “So it would seem.” (Secretly, you're panicking too, but this is going to make you seem calm in the situation).

-------4:45 'Or so they say...' meaning

This expression is often used after we have reported some information that people in general say. You can use this phrase to distance yourself from the information, especially when you’re passing on gossip, a rumour, or stereotypes.

Example:
"People from the North are more trustworthy than people from the South, or so they say”.

-------5:43 'Because I said so' meaning

When a child asks why, this phrase is usually used by parents who do not wish to explain themselves.

Example:
"Why do I have to do my homework?" "Because I said so."

-------6:20 'and so forth' meaning

"And so on" or "And so forth" share the same meaning as 'et cetera'. This phrase is used when listing topics of the same meaning.

Example:
"The study included people of different ages, genders and so forth."

-------6:58 'would you be so kind' meaning

We use this phrase when you are politely asking someone to do something for you. It is a bit old fashioned and not commonly used.

Example:
"Would you be so kind as to open the door for me?"

-------7:50 'So long' meaning

This phrase is simply another way of saying goodbye, farewell.
