WEIRD DUTCH HABITS | Unusual Customs in The Netherlands
The Dutch people are an unusual bunch! They are the tallest people in the world, they love to eat cheese and have weird birthday habits. This video is all about the Netherlands and its people. In this video I explain about the different unusual Dutch habits and why they are so unusual.
I have lived in Malaysia for over ten years, but I will always be Dutch. I love living here in Malaysia and the Malaysian people are so diverse and unique. Malaysia is very different from The Netherlands, or “Holland”, and therefore I thought it would be a great idea to share some facts about the Weird Dutch Habits.
The Netherlands is a small country in Western Europe, it has 17 million inhabitants and over 23 million bicycles! The Dutch love cycling, and give each other three kisses when they meet. One of the most famous sayings in the world is Going Dutch! One of the biggest celebrations is King’s Day (Koningsdag). On this day the Dutch celebrate the birthday of King Willem Alexander.
If you are ever invited to a Dutch Birthday party, make sure to congratulate everyone in the room - this is a typical Dutch custom. Don’t be shocked to see some Asian snacks, as the Dutch people love eating Loempia (Springroll), Satay and a Bami Schijf. What might be a little shocking is that the Dutch love mashing up their food, this is called Prakken.
When you meet a Dutch person in Holland, you will surely hear him talking about the weather. This is one of the key parts of a normal conversation in The Netherlands. This might differ a lot from your country. Here in Malaysia, the main topic in a conversation is food!
I love living in Malaysia as a Dutchman, the Malaysian culture is so different from the Dutch culture. The Dutch language is also very different from Bahasa Melayu, the food is very different here in Asia and the Malaysian nature (rainforest) is the opposite of the Dutch nature.
