WWII P-47 “Thunderbolt” Pilot Strafing German Aerodrome(4/13/1945)
Pilot Capt. Walter L. Flagg strafes a German aerodrome in his “Shoot!! You’re Faded/Darling Dottie” Republic P-47 Thunderbolt on or about April 13, 1945. He was assigned to the 63rd Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force. This video shows multiple strafing runs on what was known then as Eggebek Aerodrome. He was credited for two enemy aircraft destroyed/one damaged(for which he was awarded his 2st oak leaf cluster to the Distinguished Flying Cross medal).
He flew two tours of combat with the 56th Fighter Group flying P-47's in all phases of combat from high altitude escort to low level interdiction. For his efforts he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross(with 2 oak leaf clusters), the Air Medal(with 13 oak leaf clusters), Purple Heart, Distinguished Unit Citation(with 2 oak leaf clusters), European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal(with 6 battle stars).
At the end of his 95 missions and 387 hours with the 63rd Fighter Squadron/56th Fighter Group he was credited with destroying two enemy aircraft(air-to-air) and six(air-to-ground).
The 56th Fighter Group was also known as “Zemke’s Wolfpack”.
