Should you buy the stock AGNC? It has an 8.8% dividend yield & it pays every single month. This dividend stock is talked about often because of the high dividend yield that AGNC pays... but should you buy AGNC?

AGNC Investment Corp. is classified as a REIT that invests predominately in mortgage backed securities on a leveraged basis. Since AGNC is a REIT, it is legally required to pay out 90% of its taxable net income.

A lot of people asked me about this stock due to the high dividend yield it offers. More than an 8% dividend yield, it is attractive to dividend investors. But should you invest into AGNC stock?

If we look at the dividend information, it currently offers an 8.83% dividend yield. Paying each month, you will see a $0.12/share payment twelve times out of the year! Even though that sounds great, the AGNC has had a declining dividend for over the past 10+ years. Since it started paying monthly in 2015, AGNC dividend has been decreased from $0.22/share/month to $0.12/share/month. That is concerning.

If we look at the share price growth, that hasn't been looking too hot either. Since IP in 2008, AGNC shares are down 18.4%. In the last 5 years, AGNC shares are down 16.25%. In the last 1 year, AGNC shares are up 16.29% (recovery from 2020 crash). In 2021, AGNC shares are up 6.01%. While the short term historical return has been green, the long term is not. That is also concerning.
