Results & Lane Design Elements Used to Overcome Challenges
The good news is that the snacks will keep coming. This pallet flow lane design has all the right elements to help meet the need for efficient storage and processing for lightweight loads of relatively fragile inventory.

What we learned…
Direct mount speed controllers - top mounted in the pallet flow lane and so they make direct contact with the bottom boards of the pallet. The customer provided two types of pallets and while they are both GMA-style pallets, they have different bottom board thicknesses which produces slightly different results. With tall and slightly unwieldy loads it is important to control the speed of the pallet and to ensure that it tracks centered in the lane. The speed controllers are effective in making this happen.

Bolt-on ramp stops – help slow the pallets at the lane end and secure them. They also provide a helpful guide for forklift operators when extracting the pallets.

CHEP pallets - showed very positive flow with the very tall loads on this pallet flow rack. The pallets restarted from a standing position without hesitation.

GMA-style pallets – overall, they work in the lane, but the pallet quality shows a lack of consistency in the width of the bottom boards. One pallet, for example had bottom boards measuring 3", 3.5" 3.25", 3.25", and 4.5" wide. With 3 cross boards 11/16" thick, 1/2" thick, and 5/8" thick. That inconsistency can be challenge flow predictability in some pallet flow lane configurations. We believe that this 3-rail polycarbonate wheeled lane will effectively manage the inconsistencies.
Pallet condition - broken boards, protruding nails, missing boards and dangling plastic wrap can make any crisp operation a bit soggy, so it’s best to instruct your warehouse team to be on the lookout for inferior pallet conditions before loading them into your pallet flow lane.

Good, quality pallets will only help to ensure reliable flow, and plastic wrap on the pallets helps to strengthen the loads.
