Stride N95 running mask review (coronavirus update)

There are still restrictions in many countries regarding covid 19 pandemic which have an impact on running outdoors where social distancing may not be possible throughout the whole event. In this video I review the Stride N95 face mask (advertised for jogging and running) which may be a useful addition to your running gear to help you stay safe for when you have to wear a face covering whilst running.

Whilst many half marathons, trail marathons, road marathons, ultra marathons, ironmans, have been postponed or cancelled in 2020, there are still a few that hope to be able to run later this year. Part of their covid secure status will be to ensure that each runner has appropriate face mask that is safe to use - that doesn't interfere with breathing.

The Stride face mask (without the N95 insert) may be a solution that satisfies protection from coronavirus and avoids high resistance to breathing. It is reviewed for its performance of the filter, comfort, breathability, portability, aesthetics, and price with a final 5 star rating.

New research by Martin Fischer et al. of Duke University has measured the extent of droplet transmission through running face masks and face coverings, confirming that simple face cloths do provide a partial barrier to coronavirus droplets. However, this should not be taken as a preventative measure as the reduction in transmission through the certain fabric (designs/construction) is only a small fraction in many cases. The N95 and FFP2/3 designs provide the greatest reduction in droplet transmission. See article on "Low-cost measurement of facemask efficacy for filtering expelled droplets during speech". This study correlates well with the testing of the Stride N95 face mask without the filter; there is a greater reduction in droplet transmission, but not 100% effective. Even with the N95 filter in place, the exhaust vents also contribute to droplet transmission.
