Tracking the Hurricanes: 2017 Part One

Part one of the all-new Tracking the Hurricanes documentary. We pick up where 2016 left off and the beginning of what turned out to be a very destructive 2017. The Atlantic hurricane season was by far the most damaging in history for the United States as well as other islands within the Caribbean Sea.

In part one, we begin the year with winter storms and the prospect of an El Nino disrupting the 2017 hurricane season. As the months progressed, it looked less and less likely that El Nino would form while the Atlantic Basin warmed and was prime for development.

June begins the hurricane season and things were busy from the start. All of the signs were there for a busy season and by mid-August, just before the Great American Eclipse, Harvey formed. Its future was in doubt as it crossed the eastern Caribbean, giving us a chance to enjoy the eclipse while keeping close tabs on Harvey in case it made a comeback. That is exactly what happened and on August 22, we set out for the Texas coast, less than 24 hours after the most amazing sight I think we've ever seen in the sky.

Harvey went on to make landfall along the Texas coast during the night of August 25, breaking the nearly 12-year major hurricane landfall drought - and delivering incredible amounts of rain to portions of eastern Texas, setting all-time records and flooding millions.
