Korea had won every World Championships and the Olympics since 2017, beating Hungary in the finals of the 2017 Leipzig World Championships.

This was one of the competitions which Kim Junghwan was retired for after Wuxi 2018 World Championships. Both Oh Sanguk and Kim Junho had won Bronze in the individual event a day prior. Szilagyi Aron had won Silver in the individual event by defeating Oh Sanguk in the Semifinal.
