When Cherry Blossom was NOT the King of Flowers #Shorts

Many people visit Japan to see cherry blossoms. But the flower that represents Japan was not originally cherry blossoms. It was originally the plum flower!

The culture of hanami in Japan is said to have started in the Nara period (710-794), when the aristocrats appreciated plum blossoms introduced from China. Plum flowers bloom around February, when it is still cold, and were loved for their strength and beauty.

But this doesn’t mean the cherry blossoms were ignored during this time. At that time, the cherry blossom was considered a sacred flower that bloomed during harvest. Cherry blossoms finally became the subject of viewing once trading with China was disconnected in the 9th century. As we entered a period of renewed focus on our own culture, cherry blossoms came to the center of attention.
