Ferdinand de Saussure on Linguistics & Semiotics

Ferdinand de Saussure is one of the key figures in the development of two related disciplines - linguistics, which is the study of language, and semiology, the study of signs.
In this session we will introduces Saussure's main contributions to both fields, including his seminal idea on "signifier/signified" distinction, synchronic vs. diachronic approach to linguistics, and the distinction between a sign and a symbol. We will also discuss how these topics relate and lead to structuralism - a broad and important topic within modern and post-modern social sciences.
