Australia should have been 'more diplomatic' with China
Former New South Wales Premier Bob Carr says Australia could have been “a whole lot more” diplomatic in its relationship with China, without "surrendering Australian interest".
Mr Carr said “diplomacy’s got a lot to teach us”, given it was "invented to enable us to manage a difficult relationship in international affairs”.
“We could’ve excluded Huawei from our national 5G network, but done so without it looking like Australia was urging the world to follow us, and seeking to inflict harm on one of China’s iconic companies,” he told Sky News host Alan Jones.
He said being more strategic would have allowed Australia to increase its exports in the same way other countries have.
"We would have been increasing our exports to China, at this moment as Japan, as Canada and as the US is."
