Rational Vs Emotional Thinking & Success!
To be effective a leader, sales person, team-member…or when dealing with a difficult situation or problem, like change, risk, conflict, adversity – be it personal or professional…you must function in the rational part of the brain. With that said there are two essential parts of the brain to discuss…the limbic system, and the cortex.
The limbic system is our emotional brain, it does not develop, it’s the same as when we are born…when adversity strikes, or we are dealing with a difficult situation, or person…. if we’re functioning in this part of the brain…our adrenaline starts flowing, we start sweating, and our response will be emotional…. freeze, fight, flight – or some combination of those three…that is not how to respond effectively.
The cortex is our rational brain…it develops, evolves through time, experience, training, education & learnings…its where we draw lessons…when we’re operating in this part of the brain, we realize we have options and we draw on lessons…then, we respond rationally based on past learnings, reason, logic. At the least, we realize an emotional response will not desired results.
Only when we’re are functioning in this rational state of mind will we be able to see situations clearly, and effectively solve problems in the face of situations.
