Holiday Gossip, Social Grooming, and FOMO. Bringing People Together.
The tea about gossip. Why it is so addictive and how did it evolve? What does it have to do with the holidays? Let's bond over joy and dreams this year rather than the misfortunes of others. #HappyThanksgiving #FOMO #Teaisgossip #HolidayPsychologist #HolidayGossip #Tea #DoNotGossipThisYear #BeKind #FearOfMissingOut
Dr. D’Arienzo, Board Certified Psychologist and Relationship Expert. Here is some TEA from evolutionary psychology as to why we gather around for the holidays and prepare food and chat and the roots of FOMO and a recommended task.
Before language, our ancestors bonded by grooming each other..like picking off bugs and straightening each other’s mane, flash forward millions of years. think picking off lint, the urge to pop someone’s pimple, fix their hair or help them clean their stained shirt...so we’ve come a long way from picking off bugs and licking each other. Although we still like watching pimples being popped and hanging out at the barber shop or spa with the girls. Great segue…keep listening.
And adding to the mix, we’ve evolved to engage in social grooming through language aka gossiping . Historically this gossip was around a fire and food. Like grilling a turkey or preparing yams...now a group assembles in a kitchen or around the grill. The key to this activity in addition to preparing cooked food, is being in the know because that feels good. Welcome FOMO. It feels even better to be the one sharing the information. Unfortunately it’s often about another’s misfortunes. Probably For good reason though. You want to learn from others' mistakes. In the past, it would have saved your life.
Your task this season, rather than gossiping about someone’s misfortunes, is supporting humanity's continued evolution and sharing 3 things with your loved ones and friends. Your own lessons learned, what you are grateful for, and your plans for the new year. Let me know how that works for you. Happy holidays!
