Garner/Brandywine Tire Stockpile Cleanup (2012)
The Garner/Brandywine scrap tire site is a legacy tire dump located in rural Prince George's County. It was the largest know tire dump in the state of Maryland as Maryland Environmental Service removed approximately 1.2 million discarded tires from 15 acres of wooded ravines between 2009 and 2012. The project was undertaken to eliminate the threat of a tire fire as well as mosquito borne disease. Intermittent stream corridors located in the bottom of the ravines were restored for the benefit of the local environment and native tree species were planted throughout the restored site to help re-establish the natural habitat. The project was administered by the Maryland Department of the Environment and managed be MES.
