Stimmel Road Clean-Up, Franklin County's (OH) Largest Illegal Dump

In March 2009, a construction and demolition debris transfer station began operation. Yet over time this became a dump site containing additional waste such as household trash/garbage, mattresses, scrap tires and other solid waste, both known and unknown.

The amount of waste being brought into the facility was quickly exceeding the amount being removed and the pile of waste grew.

Criminal investigations by the Environmental Crimes Task Force of Central Ohio began, resulting in arrests, prosecutions and convictions, yet the debris remained untouched.

With assistance and funding provided by numerous agencies, clean-up of 1388 Stimmel Road began in March 2013.

Total amount of debris removed from the site:
• 22,520 total cubic yards of debris (breakdown by tons):
- 104.45 tons of solid waste
- 10,971.14 tons of construction and demolition debris
- .97 tons of scrap tires

Next steps are:
• Board of Health Lien
• Criminal Investigation
• Complaint for Injunctive Relief
• Propose Law/Rule Changes

Thank you to all of the participating agencies who made this successful clean-up possible:
• City of Columbus
• Central Ohio Contractors, Inc.
• Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney's Office
• Franklin County Public Health
• Franklin County Sheriff's Office
• Franklin Township
• Ohio Environmental Protection Agency
• Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio
