Trump designates Wilmington, N.C., to be WWII Heritage City from the battleship USS North Carolina

U.S. President Donald Trump declared the battleship USS North Carolina an “enduring symbol of American greatness” on Wednesday, as he designated Wilmington, N.C., the country’s first World War II Heritage City.

“With this designation we proudly declare that we don’t tear down the past,” Trump said in an apparent shot at protesters who have pulled down Confederate statues as part of anti-Black racism demonstrations across the U.S.

USS. North Carolina (BB-55) was the lead ship of the North Carolina class of U.S. Navy battleships in the Second World War. It was launched on June 13, 1940 and decommissioned on June 27, 1947.

The USS North Carolina was hit by a torpedo in 1942, and saw action at the Battle of the Philippine Sea in 1944.
